EVALUATION

I found this brief a really nice brief to work on. It was fairly open compared to the other competition briefs and I think this is why I ran with this one. the subject was a great one to work on, researching into the Typographic Circle and the designers and their talks, I found a lot out and found it inspiring to work on.

I used the dates on the books instead of their name because everyone would use their names however with it being a special edition series, and i believe there would only be a few people which would read these they are more likely to know the dates of the talks and can relate to these more. To distinguish each of the books there are the different coloured die cuts along with the dates.

The pages spread have a two column grid system which run of the die cut which I have traced through each spread, all the text is 9pt, 11pt leading, and on each page text is kept to a minimum to allow space for the clean style. The colour schemes run through out the books and the spines are the colour which i chose for each designer with the dates, however still no names. also the Typographic Circle logo is included on the cover and the spines which the brief requested.

Overall, I am very happy with my final outcomes. Think my books have their own style, and could be related to the Typographic Circle magazine, I aimed to produce a theme which i similar to this and i think i have achieved it.

Book Mark

Also created books marks with the different colour schemes, which aslo outline the basic information about the different speakers. I used Helvetica at different weights, also with the colour scheme for each designer.

Spines

I decided to produce the spines as an example how they would work in a series. There are no names just the dates again with the Typographic Circle logo, and above that is a letter, the people with the books can place them in order of their speeches by spelling TYPOGRAPHIC CIRCLE, also the different colours for each designer are shown on the spine for easy recognition.

Final Book

The books will all have the same layouts with the different content. Michael Wolff's Special Edition.

Spread Two changes

These are the second spread mock ups i have produce think theses pages have a lot more to say than the blank ones, they had too much white space, i think the contrast here is just right. these would have to be printed with at least a 5mm bleed for the image and the coloured line.
The text on the pages is all aligned to the right of the coloured circle which is in in the same place throughout the books. Also tech is 9pt, 11pt Gill Sans Regular.

The header is Helvetica regular, 25pt and kerning -50

Alterations

Going back to the second spreads in each book, I was wanting to make the spreads more relatable to the artist, show them who they are, can either use a piece of their work, however putting a face to the work maybe a good contrast to using all their work.

A screen shot of the page spread with a photograph of the designer. Think the black and white image is also a nice contrast to the bright orange colour scheme.

Paul Davis I produced five page spreads the third spread is outlining who he is and what he does, with a quote from a listener from one of his talks. Fourth spread is an example oh his work and another quote from himself.

Anthony Burril, I did four spreads. The spreads I produced outline the same sort of things for each designer, examples of work, quotes and about what the designer does.

Michael Wolff pages spreads

The third spread is looking more at the artist as a person and their achivements the styles on these pages change with the different artist or designers.

Spread Two

The second spreads are about the artist or designer, which has given the talk, outlining who they are and what they specialise in. The grid systems run from the circle.
However I still think these need adding to, need to represent the designer or show the designer more.

Spread One

For the first spreads in the books they will all be the same except for the colour and name. Through the die cut on the front cover it will show the coloured circle which is high lighting where the designer did their talk in these cases 'Knightsbridge Green'

To create Differences between each designer and book I each will have a different colours scheme, Thinking these colours can be shown on the spines of each book so it is visually interesting and draws the eye in however not sure what the sines would be like at this point.

I am choosing colours which relate to the designers work, Anthony Burril is red, to show he's bright and bold, with his typographic work he uses bold san serif text.

Michael Wolff is a bright orange

Paul Davis, Bright yellow

I have then decided to rotate the date so it can be enlarged slightly and be more of a main feature.

Cover Layout

As the books are on the talks that the designers gave, and are more of a archive to that talk, I think the date on which the talk was given, instead of the name of the designer gives the books more of a series theme, also the date is individual to each designer each cover is different. However the people who are most likely to read the books are the members of the Typographic Circle, so they would know some of the dates on which well known designers gave their speech.

Cover Layout

After looking at a few other examples, the use of a die cut to emphasise the 'Circle' in the
'Typographic Circle' logo which will be in the readers eye level. Unsure what will be on the
inside cover showing through however it will be relevant to the designer.

Design Ideas

Scanned pages form my book 'The Best Of Brochure design 11'
These page spreads caught my eye because of their use of different colours and interesting typography

The use of bright colours caught my eye here, with the contrasts, bold text filling the page, giving the impression of importance, which my books need to show. Also i like the loose illustrative type, and think the pages have a different experience on each page however keep tied into the theme.

Like the thought of using a die cut, could be for the cover looking through to the designers work?

The block typography caught my eye with this piece, a two column grid system with nice clear space for the readers eye to rest, also with the bleed off the page.

Contents

The Brief doesn't have specific needs to what has to go into the books, or deign style. However the brief states 'The style of the publication must NOT be a copy or pastiche of the designer you are featuring'.

I will sketch out a few ideas firstly and produce a reasonable grid system which can be used throughout the series of books, which could then lead to the other editions in the future. need to keep the content similar for example, first page be about the designer/artist, second a quotation from their speech etc. My target audience that I aim for is the Typographic Circle, therefore Iwill only need a brief introduction to the designer, and brief background coverage.

Ideas

Went back to the latex edition of circular magazine '17' and looking at previous editions, i want to keep the theme similar to the latest edition as if the special edition books are released with this magazine. emphasis on the circle, could be the linking key object to the two and the use of bright colours and experimental type on some pages.

I-D Magazine

Looking at I-D Magazine covers, where they try to emphasise The 'I' with the image shown. I want to create this thought with my book covers, to keep it key and repetitive throughout the series of books.

With the use of clean sharp images on each of the covers gives them almost a theme to run with, and linking in with the name and theme throughout the magazine.

Research

Researching brochure and magazine designs layouts (grid systems, images proportion etc).

I looked at more experimental typography, however in the contact I am working in I not sure the more abstract type is fitting to the brief. Mostly looked to see the typographic styles are out there.
